MONUMENTAL HERITAGE
Arenas del Rey:
The parish church of Arenas del Rey has
a curious feature in that its porch is between two chapels which
are situated at the base of the lateral aisles. Situated in Alfonso
XII Square, it is the most distinctive building in the village.
Its design has been described as “Romantic or Neo-romantic”.
Játar:
The church of Játar dates to the XVIth
century. And was the project of Juan Espinosa and the carpenter
Pedro Martínez Bédmar. The layout of the design
is a shaped like a Latin cross. It is one of the few remaining
churches dating from this period outside Alhama de Granada where
several such monumental buildings are well preserved.
Fornes:
This village is well known for the San Fernando flour mill which
was visited by King Alfonso XII in 1885 during his journey around
those villages worst affected by the earthquiakes in Andalusia.
Don´t miss the chance to visit the Mirador del Cerrillo
with its breathtaking views of the surrounding hillside and the
Pantano de los Bermejales. A path starts here that leads to the
nature reserve at Tejeda and Almijara.
Pantano de los Bermejales:
The reservoir (pantano) at Bermejales (1958) was the first concrete
dam to be built in the province of Granada. It was needed to store
water much needed for irrigation in the zone. It is situated near
the river Cacin canyon, of almos vertically steep sandstone walls.
This is an wxceptionally good place to swim, sail, go canoeing,
