ALGARINEJO

The regional road to Priego de Córdoba leads us to another of the Poniente´s hidden jewels: Algarinejo. The village has an impressive olive growing tradition and is situated at the foot of the Subetica Cordobesa. It consists of two dependencies: La Viña and Fuentes de Cesna, with hundreds of small farms dotted throughout the municipality.

NATURAL HERITAGE

There are hundreds of farmers cottages dotted about the landscape. There are also many traditional farm buildings of the type used to store grain, hold animals, or for keeping tools.

HISTORY

Its isolation and somewhat difficult access have meant that it has gone virtually untouched through the pasaje of time. Having been abandoned for so long, it is now doing its best to adapt to modern life. As you walk past signs that have hung from shops for decades and as you Algarinejo.

MONUMENTAL HERITAGE

Resides its urbanism and olive-growing, the Arab cultura left venid some buildings which still stand, Duch as the Arab “de Pago” castle.
Also worth a visit is the parish church of Santa María la Mayor, a very solid building, situated in the centr of the village, which cooserves interesting Neo-classical retables inside.
“Torre de Pesquera”, built between the end of the XVth century and the beginning of the XVIth century. This building was a complicated defensive structure composed of a large semicircular tower, a rectangular tower and a wall. Beloqw the tower remains of what must have been the entry point into the fortress, have been found.
Cesna castle lies to the right of river Genil, just south-east of the old village of Fuentes de Cesna. To reach the castle from the village of Fuentes de Cesna. From the castle, the reservoir at the end of the river Genil, that all important medium of communication beween the Subbetica Cordobesa and Intrabetica Loja, can be seen.

FESTIVALS

25th April, pilgrimage of Saint Marcos A country “fiesta” where familias get together and g oto the countryside to eat.
Bread with a boiled egg inside is typical on these picnics.
End of July, small fair.
